Military Side Drum

Side drums (or snare drums) traditionally hung at the side of the player and were used to give the marching speed for a body of soldiers. Military side drum, 16-inch depth. Possibly Nicholson, probably England, mid 18th century (3329).The rope-tensioned drum was used until the mid 20th century. Modern side drums are rod-tensioned and smaller, particularly when forming part of a drum kit rather than carried on the march. The old side drum sticks were heavier than most used now.
